DOJ tobacco Grant Program

In 2018, the Solano County Office of Education was awarded a Tobacco Grant from the California Department of Justice to support School Resource Officers (SROs) in Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District and Site Safety Supervisors Vallejo City USD, minor decoy operations and a countywide multi-media awareness campaign.

SCOE Youth Development Department has partnered with the Fairfield Police Department to carryout minor decoy operations to identify if local merchants are selling tobacco products to minors, those merchants caught selling to minors will be cited and receive merchant education. The Fairfield Police Department will also train SROs in prevention, intervention and cessation services to support schools and students who are caught vaping/smoking on campus.

Vallejo City USD will be training Site Safety Supervisors located at all middle, high and alternative school campuses in prevention, intervention and cessation services. Site Safety Supervisors will provide trainings to students, staff and parents around the health effects and other dangers in youth tobacco use. Upgrades to school and district signage and a media campaign development with students to raise awareness around tobacco products and cessation resources and services that are available in their community.
