Events & Activities for Students
The 2022-23 theme is "The American Revolution and the New Nation."
School teams study the theme using curriculum that is provided by the United States Academic Decathlon. Events include multiple-choice tests in different subjects: Art, Economics, Literature, Math, Science and Social Science. Events also include prepared and impromptu speeches, written essays, interviews with judges, and the Super Quiz (which is a quiz-bowl-type competition that takes place in front of a live audience when in-person).
The Solano County Elementary School Spelling Bee is open to all fourth through sixth-grade students enrolled in public or private schools within Solano County. All Spelling Bee participants will receive a certificate and gold Spelling Bee medallion for their participation. First and second place county winners will be awarded a trophy along with trophies for their schools and will advance to the California Spelling Bee Championships.
The SCOE Youth Development Department has collaborated with local community-based organizations to develop a countywide Student Art Showcase. The goal is to recognize youth artists, showcasing their talent in a hybrid setting that would allow for performances and displays, as well as participation virtually through a live stream event and pre-recorded content. There are three components of the Student Art Showcase, the performing arts, art exhibit (including a community art division), and community booths.
*The Student Art Showcase is part of the Art is Power Series. Also, included are the Speaker Series (below) and the Solano Youth Resiliency Summit.
Art is Power a Speaker Series for youth, is hosted by the Solano County Office of Education Youth Development Services in partnership with Nature of Sound. The Speaker Series is a collection of workshops hosted by various local, state and national artists, each workshop will focus on a different forms of art.
Workshops are designed for middle and high school students of all artistic levels. Artists will talk about technique, process and about using art to further one's cause. Art can be a powerful tool and helps build resiliency, and resilient youth are less likely to partake in risky behaviors (such as using alcohol, tobacco and other drugs). The series is funded through the Tobacco Use Prevention Education (TUPE) Grant.
