The OSHA-NIOSH Heat Safety Tool is a useful resource for planning outdoor work activities based on how hot it feels throughout the day. It has a real-time heat index and hourly forecasts specific to your location. It also provides occupational safety and health recommendations from OSHA and NIOSH.
The OSHA-NIOSH Heat Safety Tool features:
- A visual indicator of the current heat index and associated risk levels specific to your current geographical location
- Precautionary recommendations specific to heat index-associated risk levels
- An interactive, hourly forecast of heat index values, risk levels, and recommendations for planning outdoor work activities
- Signs and symptoms and first aid for heat-related illnesses

Solano School districts are committed to staying open to the extent possible to support student learning, working families, and student safety. However, districts understand that some parents may opt to keep students home due to poor air quality. In most instances, these absences will be excused. However, parents should check directly with their school for information about possible excused absences.
School Closures
Schools will be closed if air quality reaches levels 5 and 6 ("Very Unhealthy" and "Hazardous" levels with AQI rating ranging from 200 to 500.) Districts may close schools during events with lower AQI levels based upon factors like temperature, power outages, evacuations, COVID-19 mitigation, etc. All districts will communicate directly with parents and staff about closures. Air quality conditions can change quickly. School districts may need to close schools during the school day and parents should plan accordingly.
