Our Purpose
The SCOE Deaf and Hard of Hearing (D/HH) Program is designed to develop strong, independent, and individual learners.

Our programs, at all levels, our focus is on the whole child and his/her natural language acquisition.

Modes of Communication
While children who are deaf or hard-of-hearing have a common need for effective communication, each child learns differently. Therefore, no single approach to communication is appropriate for all children. Modes of communication used by our staff can include: American Sign Language (ASL), Spoken/Written English, and Conceptually Accurate Signed English (CASE).

Infant Program
The Infant Home-Based Program focuses on the facilitation of language acquisition and listening skills for babies, birth to 18 months, using sign and spoken language. Monitoring of developmental milestones and providing parent support are key components of the Individual Family Service Plan (IFSP). Individual needs and desired outcomes are addressed during home visits in the child’s natural environment.

Toddler Program
The Toddler Program is designed for children who are between 18 months and 3 years old. The program emphasizes language skill development through structured and unstructured play, group activities, individual speech and listening therapy sessions, parent trainings, and resources about educational and community DHH services and options.

School-Age Program
The School-Age Program offer various degrees of support depending on student needs. This continuum of services includes: core curriculum instruction in a special day class (SDC), placement in the general education setting (mainstreaming) with sign language interpreters and/or assistive listening devices (FM), and remedial support in the D/HH classroom, utilizing visual and technological strategies.

Itinerant Services
Students ages 3 to 22 years old receive services based on their ability to access the general education curriculum through either a direct support or consult model. Itinerant Services are provided at each student’s school.
