Volunteer Roles and Descriptions

We are looking for volunteers to serve as interview and speech judges, as well as proctors for Super Quiz. To ensure you're well-prepared, we'll provide training both online and in person before the event. As a tooken of our appreciation complimentary breakfast (provided by the Solano County Office of Edcuation) and lunch (provided by the Fairfield-Suisun Rotary Club) will be served.

Speech Judge - As a speech judge, you will be placed on a team with one to two other volunteers to listen to decathletes present two speeches - one prepared and one impromptu - and evaluate them using the guidelines and scoring forms provided. Speeches will be judged in person. All judges are encouraged to attend a brief orientation on Zoom in the 1-2 weeks leading up to the event. There will also be an in person orientation on the morning of the event.
 
Interview Judge - As an interview judge, you will be placed on a team with two to three other volunteers to interview decathletes (similar to a job interview) and evaluate their responses using the guidelines and scoring forms provided. All interviews will take place in person, in an arena style set up (multiple tables stationed around a large room). All judges are encouraged to attend a brief orientation on Zoom in the 1-2 weeks leading up to the event. There will also be an in-person orientation on the morning of the event.
 
Super Quiz Proctor - As a Super Quiz Proctor, you will monitor and encourage a team of students in a lively competitive event held in a gymnasium. Your responsibilities will include verifying student participation, as well as distributing and collecting test materials.
 
Room Monitor - As a room monitor, you will assist speech judges by keeping time and holding up timescards to show decathletes how much time they have remaining. You will also help the speech judges complete the online scoring form and ensure the assigned room stays on schedule. As a room monitor, you will listen to the speeches but will not be scoring.
 
Runner/Escort - As a runner and/or escort, you will assist decathletes locating their speech rooms, interview station, and direct them to the Super Quiz event. You will also provide general day of support to the Bay Region Academic Decathlon Event Staff.
 
Event Descriptions

Event Descriptions

Speech - The Speech event includes both prepared and impromptu speech components (students will perform both). The prepared speech is on an topic students have selected and prepared in advance. The prepared speech is up to four minutes in length. The impromptu speech will follow, and students will be asked to give a speech, up to two minutes in length, with only one minute to prepare.
 
Interview - In the interview, students will have between six and seven minutes to answer questions about themselves. Students should be prepared to answer questions about their background, interests, goals, etc.
 
Essay - In the essay, students have 50-minutes to write the strongest response possible. Students will chose from one of the prompts provided, the essay is done online ahead of the Speech, Interview and Super Quiz events.
 
Objective Tests - Students will take seven multiple choice exams, one in each of the Academic Decathlon subjects: Art, Economics, Literature, Mathematics, Music, Science, and Social Science. The Objective Tests are take virtually on the weekend before the Speech, Interview, and Super Quiz events.
 
Super Quiz - In the Super Quiz team event, teammates take turns solving though multiple-choice challenges in a trivia-like format. This is the only event open to the public. This event does not impact team or individual scores, as it is designed in the spirit of sportsmanship, teamwork and FUN!
