Spelling Bees inspire a love for language and vocabulary. They help students enhance their spelling skills, expand their vocabularies, grasp key concepts, and develop strong English usage beyond everyday language. In addition, Spelling Bee encourage critical thinking, improve memory retention, foster healthy competition, and boost students' confidence in public speaking and performance under pressure.

The 49th Annual Solano County Elementary School Spelling Bee is open to all public and private schools serving fourth through sixth-grade students within the county. Schools will host their own school-wide spelling bee competitions, where the top two spellers will qualify to participate in the Solano County Spelling Bee.

During the county competition, students will be eliminated after misspelling two words. The top two finalists will then advance to the state championship.

Helping Students Prepare for a Spelling Bee
Helping students prepare for a spelling bee is an exercise in purpose, dedication, and tenacity. Being your student's partner in education will model a foundation built for a lifelong love of language, a buzz for achievement, and the confidence to "bee-lieve".

And remember - Keep it fun! Find the joy in spelling.

Not sure how to guide your students? Helping prepare for a spelling bee can be as easy as 1, 2, 3... or A, B, C!
  1. Read. Read. Read. Reading helps move the practice along. Ready all the books and news articles within arm's reach!
  2. Practice, practice, practice. It is important that spelling is addressed every single day. There are countless online and readily available word lists.
  3. Study the rules. Knowing spelling rules like "i before e except after c" helps when learning words. And don't forget the "building blocks" of the English language! Prefixes and suffixes, and Greek and Latin root words come in handy when constructing language. They help to understand a word's meaning and spelling convention.
