Youth Development is a process that equips young people with the skills and experiences needed to navigate the challenges of adolescence and adulthood. This is achieved through a series of coordinated activities and services that help them build essential competences. Youth leadership and advocacy play a key role in this process. To effectively take control of their lives and make informed decisions, young people need:

  • Mentorship programs that foster strong relationships with supportive adults
  • Peer-to-peer mentoring opportunities
  • Training in skills like self-advocacy and conflict resolution
  • Exposure to personal leadership, youth development activities and community services
  • Opportunities to practice leadership and boost self-esteem

SCOE YDS oversees the the following youth-led programs to promote youth leadership and advocacy:

  • Solano Friday Night Live (SFNL)
  • Solano Youth Coalition (SYC)
  • Solano Friday Night Live Mentoring (FNLM)
Components of Youth Development

Components of Youth Development

Youth Voice

Youth Voice empowers young people by making them feel like they belong, are valued, and that their contributions matter. These feelings also help them fully engage and develop leadership skills. Providing youth, the opportunity to express themselves—and further, respecting their thoughts, ideas, and opinions—is essential for personal and social development. Social and personal development equips young people with the tools and experiences they need to thrive. It influences all aspects of their lives, from forming healthy relationship and developing leadership abilities to making informed decisions and contributing positively to society. SCOE YDS Programs foster and promote Youth Voice through genuine youth-adult partnerships, bringing young people and adults together to collaborate on program goals and projects. Programs that incorporate Youth Voice tend to have a greater impact because they are designed by youth, for youth. Youth Voice gives students a sense of ownership within their communities (both at school and where they live), empowering them to make more informed decisions for themselves.

Youth Empowerment

Youth Empowerment enables young people to take charge of their lives and become active, responsible adults who positively contribute to society. SCOE YDS fosters Youth Empowerment through:
