Intervention Services

Intervention services provide vital programs to districts and schools to support students who have been caught vaping, are thinking about using, and/or are experimenting with alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. All services below are free to school sites and TUPE staff is available to provide training, technical assistance and other supports for schools implementing intervention services.
BRIEF INTERVENTION

BRIEF INTERVENTION

 
Brief Intervention is an intervention counseling strategy consisting of 2-4 sessions for adolescents who use alcohol, tobacco, and/or other drugs. This training concerns a specific intervention approach that uses motivational interviewing, cognitive behavior therapy, and the stages of change model to meet the needs of adolescents.
 
SCOE offers FREE trainings for district and school staff; trainings for the 2023-24 school year have not yet been scheduled.

Y Vape a free program for schools to assist students with quitting tobacco
 
YVAPE is a counseling and educational program for students who have been caught vaping on campus. This program is available to public middle and high schools who will enroll students instead of suspension. The program is designed to help the students think through their vaping behavior and provide a positive experience.

STANFORD TOBACCO TOOLKIT: HEALTHY FUTURES

Stanford Medicine Healthy Futures intervention service for youth
 
Healthy Futures Curriculum was developed by Stanford Medicine and can be used as an alternative to suspension. There are three versions of the curriculum, the flexibility of the program allows for schools to implement the program that best fits its needs. The curriculum covers the health effects of vaping/tobacco, the brain, targeted messaging, and tactics used by Big Tobacco and the cost.

INTERVENTION FOR NICOTINE DEPENDENCE: EDUCATION, PREVENTION, TOBACCO, & HEALTH (INDEPTH)

American Lung Association
 
INDEPTH was developed by the American Lung Association in partnership with the Prevention Research Center of West Virginia University. This program is a convenient alternative to suspension or citation helping schools and communities address the youth vaping epidemic. The program does not focus exclusively on punitive measures, instead this interactive program teaches students about nicotine dependence, establish healthy habits, and how to quit their unhealthy addiction.
